The FNX-45 In September’s GUNS Magazine

Properly outfitted with a Streamlight TLR-1 and a SilencerCo Omega K suppressor, the FNX-45 Tactical is an all-around winner for any home-defense arsenal. The GUNS September cover story by Will Dabbs, MD, highlights the many features (and government origins) of the impressive “Home-Defense Hammer.”

Utterly reliable throughout extensive testing with a variety of .45 ACP loads, Dabbs’ test FNX-45 effortlessly proved its prowess as a defensive handgun. “With all the cool guy stuff in place and a full 15-round magazine, this gun is heavy. You won’t want to hump it underneath shorts and a T-shirt. However, this is not its mission. This is the gun you grab when you have to defend your castle. For this application it’s perfect,” Will says.

In “The Mightiest Mini,” Mike Cumpston details the 7.62×39 punch delivered by the Ruger Tactical Mini 30 Stainless. “More often than not, my 100-yard benchrested groups kept four or five of the rounds in less than 2 inches, with a fifth widening the group significantly,” Mike reports. “The rifle is fully suitable as a light big-game, large-varmint utility tool out to 200 yards. At 300 yards it’s just plain fun. It’s also an effective defensive carbine at reasonable ranges.”

The September issue includes a cautionary piece by Mike “Duke” Venturino on the topic of handloading. He reminds readers loads should go “Bang! – Not, Boom!” The Mossberg Model 590 Shockwave is turning heads for its uniqueness, power and (mostly) over-the-counter availability – details are in this month’s “Surplus, Classic and Tactical Firearms” column. And M.L. McPherson continues his academic discourse with a primer on cartridge components and how they work in “Bullet vs. Barrel.”

The awe-inducing Scythe by BlackSword is the top prize up for grabs in this month’s giveaway. At a lightweight 6.4 pounds, the Scythe features a 16-inch 5.56×45 barrel with a 1:8-inch twist and 5R rifling. September’s winner will also receive a Ruike P831-SF knife by Fenix, Original Vent Covert Gloves by Mechanix Wear and FrogLube’s Optx Lens Cleaning Kit. Altogether, this extraordinary package totals $1,577.99. Readers are invited to enter the free drawing online by visiting www.gunsmagazine.com/giveaway

Exclusive content is just a click away! This month’s Online Feature, “Just Enough Gun,” makes the case for the .30 M1 Carbine as a home defender. The September issue of GUNS is on newsstands now with a digital version available for purchase online at www.gunsmagazine.com/digital-version/
