Triple threat handgun the CZ Shadow 2 | Larry Vickers

When a good friend reached out and asked for my recommendation on a metal-frame DA/SA 9mm that could genuinely serve three distinct roles—serious tactical/home defense pistol, capable carry gun, and top-tier competition handgun—I didn’t have to think long. The obvious contenders were the SIG P226 Legion series and the CZ 75 family. For me, it was an easy call. The CZ Shadow 2 stands in a category all by itself.
This pistol has the pedigree, the shootability, and the versatility to handle it all without compromise. You can run it straight DA on the draw or cock it and lock it with the manual safety for SA mode—exactly what a lot of experienced shooters want in a fighting handgun. That flexibility is a big plus in my book.
We jumped on the CZ pistol configuration portal and built this one exactly the way we wanted it. The finish is a striking Cerakote two-tone—black slide over OD green frame. It looks sharp and professional, nothing like the typical blue or orange competition guns you see everywhere. Turns out these configured pistols come straight from the CZ Custom Shop, so you’re getting that premium touch right from the start.
Of course we topped it with a red dot. I went with the Aimpoint ACRO P2 because, in my opinion, it’s the most bombproof optic out there. Competition shooters might have other favorites, but when it comes to duty, home defense, or serious use where failure is not an option, the ACRO P2 is king.
The rest of the accessories are CZ factory pieces except for the grips, which came from Lok Grips. They make several excellent options for the Shadow 2, and it really comes down to personal taste—which flavor fits your hand best. We also had the Custom Shop install their barrel bushing setup for even tighter accuracy on top of the already excellent factory gun. I wanted the direct mount optic setup instead of an optic-ready slide with a plate—maximum ruggedness, no questions asked.
We skipped the rear sight entirely and ran a plain black front sight only. That front post helps guide the gun during the draw or presentation and keeps your eye focused where it belongs—on the ACRO’s dot. No tritium, no fiber optic. Deliberate choice. I don’t want anything pulling attention away from that red dot in a high-stress situation.
The DA/SA trigger on the Shadow 2 is already best-in-class. Crisp, consistent, and predictable right out of the box. No additional work needed from the Custom Shop there.
When it was all said and done, this pistol exceeded expectations for exactly what my friend needed. Yes, it’s an all-steel handgun so it has some weight, and yes, when you spec one out like this you’re looking at the neighborhood of $3000. But you get what you pay for. The pros of having a true triple-duty pistol far outweigh those considerations.
If you’ve never shot a Shadow 2, the softness of the recoil and overall shootability have to be experienced to be believed. There’s a reason these pistols dominate competition circles worldwide—they flat out work and they work extremely well.
This is, in my opinion, the top-of-the-line triple-threat DA/SA all-steel handgun you can buy today.

As always—shoot straight.
